Thanksgiving: A Weapon of War

DAY 3 OF 3

Day 3: Thanksgiving as an Expression of Faith

Written by Opeyemi Ibikunle

Key Verse: "Let them praise His name with the dance; let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp." Psalm 149:3 (NKJV)

Thanksgiving transcends mere singing and verbal expressions of gratitude; it's a potent weapon in our spiritual arsenal. When we offer thanksgiving, we effectively surrender our worries and concerns to God, acknowledging His sovereignty and inviting His presence into our circumstances. This act of praise is a declaration of faith, a tangible demonstration of our trust in God's ability and willingness to intervene on our behalf.

The account in Luke 17:17-19 of the ten lepers healed by Jesus provides profound insight into the relationship between thanksgiving and faith. Of the ten who were healed, only one returned to express gratitude. Jesus' response to this man—"Arise, go thy way: thy faith has made thee whole"—unveils a deeper truth. Intriguingly, Jesus attributed the man's wholeness to his faith, even though he had come back simply to give thanks. This interaction illuminates the intrinsic connection between thanksgiving and faith, suggesting that true thanksgiving is, in essence, an expression of profound faith in God's goodness and sovereignty.

A powerful illustration of this principle is found in the biblical account of the Israelites and the walls of Jericho. As they marched around the fortified city, their act of obedience and faith manifested through shouting "Hallelujah"—a proclamation of praise and thanksgiving. This seemingly simple act might appear foolish or ineffective to human eyes. However, in the spiritual realm, it served as a potent weapon of warfare, ultimately leading to their miraculous victory as the formidable walls crumbled.

This extraordinary event showcases the awe-inspiring power of God. It demonstrates how actions that may seem insignificant or even absurd from a human perspective can hold tremendous spiritual significance and power. The fall of Jericho's walls stands as a testament to the effectiveness of thanksgiving and praise as spiritual warfare strategies.

Moreover, this account reminds us that our Almighty God continues to operate in ways that surpass human understanding. He remains actively engaged in performing great and mighty deeds in our lives and in the world around us. The key lies in our willingness to trust Him completely, surrendering control of our circumstances to His capable hands. This surrender is beautifully exemplified through thanksgiving—a powerful expression of faith that acknowledges God's sovereignty and goodness, even before we see the manifestation of His promises.

Thank God today for His mercy and His hand in every circumstance, big and small. Praise invites God’s strength to operate in ways beyond our understanding. Let us trust God’s process, knowing He fights for us, and offer Him thanksgiving as a sign of our faith and obedience. As we lift our praises, let’s proclaim our confidence in God’s ability to bring victory and celebrate His unfailing love.
