ChangeMakers: Unsung Women of the Bible (Part 1)

DAY 3 OF 10

Joanna

Joanna is a lesser-known, but incredibly significant, woman in the New Testament. Her story is briefly mentioned in Luke 8:2-3, yet her impact was profound. Joanna was the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod Antipas' household, a position that placed her in close proximity to power and influence. But rather than remaining in a comfortable, privileged life, Joanna chose to follow Jesus, committing herself to His mission.

Joanna, along with other women, supported Jesus and His disciples financially. This was no small thing. In a time when women often had limited resources and influence, Joanna used what she had to make sure Jesus’ ministry could continue. She traveled with Him, served alongside the other disciples, and was there in critical moments of His life and death. According to Luke 24:10, Joanna was one of the women who discovered the empty tomb, becoming one of the first witnesses to the resurrection.

What makes Joanna’s story so remarkable is that she was willing to risk her social standing to follow Jesus. As the wife of someone in Herod’s inner circle, supporting a radical teacher like Jesus could have cost her everything. Yet, she didn’t hesitate to use her resources, her time, and her energy to further the work of the Kingdom. She is an inspiring example of what it means to boldly follow Jesus.

Joanna’s faithfulness and generosity behind the scenes remind us that being a changemaker doesn’t always mean taking center stage. Sometimes, it’s about faithfully supporting the work of others in ways that are often unseen but deeply impactful.

Joanna’s contribution enabled Jesus’ ministry to reach many people, and her decision to follow Him marked her as part of one of the greatest movements in history.

Her story teaches us that every act of service and generosity matters, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Whether it’s giving of our time, talent, or treasure, God values our willingness to contribute to furthering His work. Like Joanna, we are all called to think beyond ourselves and invest in something bigger.

Prayer & Meditation

"These women were helping to support them out of their own means. Joanna... and many others." – Luke 8:3

Joanna inspires us to give generously, serve faithfully, and follow Jesus, even when it requires sacrifice. Our impact, like hers, can change lives and leave a legacy of faith for generations to come. As you look at the image of Joanna as conveyed through The Chosen, consider what it's like to set a side position and privilege for the kingdom of God. How is God nudging you to give, serve, and follow Him?
