Dually Devoted – a Devotional for Bivocational Pastors and Leaders.

DAY 1 OF 14

Being Bivocational is not the path of least resistance. It involves serving both the Body of Christ and earning a wage in a secular environment, where challenges are real but unexpected rewards can also be found. This ministry model, exemplified by the Apostle Paul, is mentioned only a few times in scripture, leaving its full definition open to interpretation. For those who walk this path, the specifics are not fully laid out. Each scenario has its unique challenges, gifts, schedules, expectations, and limitations. It is definitely not a “one size fits all” scenario. For Paul, “tentmaking” was a way to provide for himself and his ministry. While some of his provision came through the church, Paul took pride in working with his own hands so that his preaching of the Gospel would not be hindered by financial burdens or expectations that could stifle the Good News. However, Paul did not set this as a standard for every minister. He clearly states in some of his letters that financial support should be given in proportion to the efforts of those who serve the church.

But what if this support isn’t enough? What if the ministry can’t afford what is needed for one’s living, especially if there is a spouse, a family, or other necessary expenses?

While some choose this direction as a ministry strategy for “incarnational” ministry, others do so out of necessity. For one group, it is a clear and willing choice, while for the other, it is a choice made for them—a detour they have come to accept.

No matter where you find yourself today, know that God sees your heart and honors your commitment to being “dually devoted”—to becoming the hands and feet of Jesus to your spouse, family, friends, and also to a lost and dying world. You may have experienced struggles, isolation, misgivings, and frustrations, but you will also encounter divinely appointed moments through prayer, empowerment, and service to a world beyond the walls of a building to which you have been called.

Over the next thirteen days, this devotional aims to both celebrate the opportunities and address some of the challenges, offering encouragement through the scriptures for those of us called to this path of Bivocational ministry.
