Day Six: Christ's Perfect Priesthood

In Hebrews 5 Paul takes us on a deep dive into the role of Christ as our ultimate High Priest.

The first person of the Trinity, the Father, is the first among equals. They're equal among themselves, but the Father has a unique function in the Trinity. He's the one that's ordering the world. Jesus only obeys the will of the Father, only does what the Father tells him to do, and only does the things that are revealed to him by the Father. Everything is in the Father's timing, the Father's plan, the Father's will. Jesus lays down his will and takes up the will of the Father. They're equally God, but there’s diversity of function. Okay, I just love to hammer that point. It's my favorite ever.

Jesus wasn’t your average priest. Earthly priests had to offer sacrifices for their own sins because, well, they were human and flawed. But Jesus? He’s perfect. He didn’t need to atone for His own sins—He had none. Yet, He stepped into human flesh, experiencing our weaknesses. He wasn’t just playing along; He genuinely felt what we feel. This wasn’t some divine hazing ritual. Jesus modeled obedience through suffering, showing us that even in our weakness, we can overcome.

The preacher in Hebrews isn’t just giving us a theology lesson; he’s challenging us to grow up in our faith. Christology—our understanding of who Jesus is—shouldn’t be something we just nod at and move on from. The more we lean into our understanding of Jesus, the more we mature, distinguishing right from wrong, good from evil.

People have an immature Christology. And that's why they make all types of excuses for their sins. And they come to all types of bad interpretations to validate their sin. It's not good enough to know about getting in shape. We have to apply the knowledge.

There’s a lot of debate happening on Instagram right now, and it’s not just about sin or biblical interpretation—it’s a Christological issue. The real question is: Is Jesus God? If He is, and He spoke the world into existence and holds everything together with His words, then are His words worth being trusted? At the end of the day, it comes down to this: Do you trust that what Jesus says matters, is faithful, and is worthy of trust?
