DAY 18 OF 18

Wonder: Trust Fall

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” MATTHEW 6:33

She had learned to defend herself fiercely, and that was not what God wanted. She had learned to fight for her rights, and God was asking her to trust Him. He had not made her a weakling, ready to lie down and be trodden on. He had made her a meekling: one with all the power of the Kingdom of God at her fingertips, but willing to step back and let Him defend her. Life with Him was exhilarating, challenging even—but so fun.

Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will find it” (Matthew 16:25). What a challenging message, especially for those of us who have grown up learning to rely most heavily on ourselves and our own abilities. Never mind those team-building “trust fall” exercises where your coworkers agree to catch you when you fall backward. For those of us who have had to learn how to stand alone and strong, surrender can feel as scary as leaning over the side of the Grand Canyon. When I struggle the hardest to lay aside the distraction of fixing things, I remember what Jesus lost in order to gain everything: “For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus could have fixed His problem. He had plenty to worry about. But He sought the Kingdom of God first and foremost, and we have everything to thank Him for now. What distractions are keeping you from the Kingdom today? Set your eyes right, trust Him, and take a step.

God,

people may say that being a Christian is boring, but I know that life with You is never boring. What an adventure! Allow me to live victoriously and joyously in Your presence, spending my life in awe of You and Your Kingdom. May I seek You above all and then watch as everything else slips into place. You are worth being amazed by.

In Jesus’s name, Amen.
