Daily Bible Reading— August 2024, God’s Guiding Word: FaithSample
August 5
Introduction
Joshua 22:10–34: The tribes west of the Jordan River hear that the eastern tribes have built their own altar, and for this they are prepared to wage war. Phinehas the priest (grandson of Aaron) and ten leaders from the western tribes are appointed to speak to the eastern tribes and tell them that building another altar is disobedience to the LORD.
Today’s Key Verse: Joshua 22:22a
“The Mighty One is God! He is the LORD! The Mighty One is God! He is the LORD!”
Reflect
According to Deuteronomy 12:5–19, the LORD wanted the Israelites to have only one altar for offering sacrifices. What did Phinehas and the leaders say to the eastern tribes (verses 16–20)? How did the eastern tribes respond (verses 21–29)? How was the matter resolved? According to verse 34, what purpose did the altar serve? In what ways does your community of faith bear witness to God?
Pray
Sovereign God, you alone are our Mighty God and Lord of all. I worship you and praise your holy name. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Joshua 23:1–16: Joshua delivers his farewell address.
