DAY 22 OF 31

August 22

Introduction

Ruth 4:1–22: The relative of Naomi’s husband agrees to let Boaz buy Naomi’s field. As a public sign of this agreement, he removes his sandal and gives it to Boaz. This was a custom in ancient Israel to indicate that a purchase involving land or property was complete. Boaz is now permitted to marry Ruth. They have a son, Obed (whose name in Hebrew means “worshiper”), who becomes the ancestor of King David of Israel.

Today’s Key Verse: Ruth 4:17

The women of the neighborhood named the boy Obed. They told everyone, “A boy has been born to Naomi!” Obed became the father of Jesse, who was the father of David.

Reflect

The book of Ruth begins with the death of Naomi’s husband and sons and ends with the birth of a child and a new life for the community. Compare Naomi’s feelings at the end of the first chapter with those at the end of chapter four. What does this tell you about what God can accomplish in our lives? Reflect on the role of community in the book of Ruth—Ruth and Naomi being met by the women when they arrive in Bethlehem (1:19), Boaz instructing Ruth to work in the field with other women (2:8–9), the women of the neighborhood rejoicing at the birth of Naomi’s grandson and naming him (4:13–17). Even though Obed was not technically the son or grandson of Naomi, the women of Bethlehem knew that, because of Ruth’s son, Naomi’s family would continue and Naomi’s place in the community was once again secure. In what ways have you experienced community support in your life?

Pray

God of new life and faithfulness, with you nothing is impossible. With a thankful heart, I praise you, Lord God. You are able to lead us from despair to hope and from sorrow to joy. Amen.
