DAY 4 OF 6

A Father’s Heart

I once read a story about a boy who played catch with his father. His dad would always allow him to catch the first nine throws but always threw the tenth ball such that, he could never catch it. By the time the young man was older, he had resolved not to work with his dad much to his family’s surprise. When asked he replied, “I want to be able to catch that tenth ball”.

There is a poem titled “Children Learn What They Live” by Dorothy Law Nolte and it is as follows.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn

If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight

If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy

If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty

If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient

If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence

If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate

If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice

If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith

If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world.

The Amplified translation of this verse talks about fathers exasperating their children with unreasonable demands. As parents, we must be cautious when comparing one sibling with another or comparing our children with others. This can engender sibling rivalry or an inferiority complex among our children. Rather, we must praise profusely when they get it right and encourage them when they feel unworthy or incapable.

Though our focal Scripture specifically mentions fathers, mothers will do well to take a cue from it too.

Reflection:

In what way is God speaking to you to be a better parent? ‬‬‬‬

Prayer:

Lord, we pray for parents that we will raise our children through your grace and in your wisdom and nurture them in your love in Jesus’ name. Amen.
