Let There Be Light

DAY 4 OF 21

John Chapter 4

Title: The Gift of Living Water

Scripture: John 4:10, 14

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water... But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Thought:

We are all created with an inner thirst for God. But how often do we run to things we think will satisfy us, only to find ourselves still longing and thirsty? We pursue things we think we need or want (i.e. pleasures, power, relationships) only to realise they don’t satisfy like we thought they would.

It’s only what Jesus gives us that satisfies the deepest longings of our soul and spirit. Jesus Himself says, “Whoever drinks of this water (the water in the well) will thirst again.” He says, “Whoever drinks of the water that I give him will never thirst.” Jesus is making the point that HE is the living water we need and that whoever drinks the water provided by Jesus will never thirst again. Jesus offers us lasting satisfaction; however, the key is to drink the water that Jesus gives us.

Charles Spurgeon wrote, “What does a thirsty man do to get rid of his thirst? He drinks. Perhaps there is no better representation of faith in all the Word of God than that. To drink is to receive - to take in the refreshing draught - and that is all. A man’s face may be unwashed, but yet he can drink; he may be a very unworthy character, but yet a draught of water will remove his thirst. Drinking is such a remarkably easy thing, it is even more simple than eating”.

The enemy would love to convince us that pursuing Jesus is a difficult task - where will we find the time? Where do we start? But as Spurgeon says - drinking is simple.

Application:

If the key is to drink the water that Jesus gives us, reflect upon simple ways you can drink the living water this week. For example, you could set an alarm 15 minutes earlier to read God’s word each day. Or, set a reminder on your phone to pause and pray briefly throughout your day, or incorporate prayer together as a family each day.

Prayer:

Lord, help us to drink from the living water You offer. Guide us to find simple ways to connect with You daily. May our thirst be quenched by Your presence and our lives be transformed by Your love. Amen.

About this Plan

Let There Be Light

At the beginning of Genesis 1, God spoke the word, “Let there be light,” and it overcame darkness. In Jesus, God sent the Word, Jesus, and He overcame the darkness helping us see God’s good plan for our lives. By reading one chapter from John’s gospel each day, with the accompanying devotion, you’ll see God’s nature in Jesus, God’s work through Jesus, and God’s plan for all to know Jesus.
