DAY 12 OF 12

Loving, Supporting, and Becoming Leaders

In the last reading, you explored the idea of serving others as a follower of Jesus. While the command to love and serve others applies to all believers, that calling weighs heavier and differently on leaders.

Any group of people needs a leader to establish the course of their purpose and set an example. Jesus obviously did this with His disciples, and the first groups of believers did so as well (Acts 6:1-4). But they didn’t appoint just anyone to lead. They looked for men and women with Christ-like maturity who were self-disciplined and committed to the group and God’s mission.

In contrast with rulers in social spheres, leaders in the early church were called to use their influence and authority to serve those they lead (see Jesus’ instructions in Matt. 20:25-28). People who aspired to leadership strived to be faithful at home, sober-minded, peace-seeking, and mature in faith (1 Timothy 3:1-12). If those characteristics seem daunting, you’re right—they are. God sets such a high standard for Christian leaders because they have a direct influence and impact on the health and maturity of the church.

Do you sense that God could call you into leadership? Begin cultivating spiritual disciplines now that are outlined in every section of this study, starting with Day 1. Seek a community with older leaders who can provide guidance and accountability. Not everyone is called to be a leader, and that’s ok. If you aren’t, you have the privilege of loving and supporting the leaders God gives you. Think about how you can be an encouragement to them today.

Prayer

“God, thank You so much for demonstrating perfect leadership through Jesus. Whether You call me to be a leader or not, I want to emulate His life. Thank You for the leaders You’ve given me today. Even when they aren’t perfect, show me how to best support and encourage them.”

Day 11

About this Plan

The Vine

One of the most common questions for people who are new to following Jesus is, “What do I do now?” What does it look like to love him, obey him, and be a part of a community of believers? This reading plan gives a biblical framework for how to integrate your personal relationship with Jesus and the mission of the church.
