DAY 5 OF 7

Hold Nothing Back

Theme verse: “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.” John 12:26

Some of the most sincere football fans follow college teams. Other adjectives that could be used are enthusiastic, earnest, devoted, and genuine. Growing up in Nebraska, I have likely experienced the most sincere fans in college football.

Nebraska owns an NCAA record streak of 396 consecutive sellouts at Memorial Stadium as of 2023. While they expect more than 90,000 each home game, they’re known for their show on the road as well. More than 60,000 Husker fans made the trip for their 2002 Rose Bowl game. Maybe the most impressive indication of fan devotion is their Spring Game attendance that includes a school-record 86,818 fans in 2018. Fan Day attracts more than 10,000 during the fall camp to have players sign autographs and take pictures with fans.

John 12 highlights a paradigm change when describing several acts of worship. From Mary’s spontaneous and unrestrained worship, we learn how it should be an outpouring of complete devotion, holding nothing back, expressed by a sincere heart. Too often, believers go through the motions of worship on Sunday morning without genuine devotion.

Another vital lesson in this chapter is the understanding that because God walked on earth in human flesh, no one needed a priest or place to interact with God. People could now meet face-to-face with the Lord. The Lord came to them in the person of His Son. That means even a coach or athlete can express worship with sincerity while competing in sports.

A Kingdom Coach and Athlete have a sincere heart that holds nothing back when worshiping God. They believe Jesus calls them to live out our faith fully, acting on the beliefs they proclaim.

H.E.A.R.

As you read today’s chapter, journal using the H.E.A.R method:

H (Highlight) - What stands out to you? If something stands out to you, it’s likely God pulling you toward a certain portion of scripture.

E (Explain) - Describe in context the text. Ask questions like: Why was this written? To whom was it originally written? How does this fit with the verses before and after? Why did the Holy Spirit include this passage in the book?

A (Apply) - How do you take this verse beyond the page? Ask questions like: How can this help me? What does this mean today? What would the application of this verse look like in my life? What is God saying to me?

R (Respond) - This is where you will write a measurable response to the truth God revealed. Maybe it will be a call to action, something you will change in the coming week. Maybe it will be a prayer asking God to help you work this truth into your life. Whichever, make sure it is measurable so you can hold yourself accountable in your growth as a disciple.
