Confessing to Others

DAY 1 OF 4

Let’s Talk About Your Sins

In late 2021 a song shocked the world. No one expected this quirky bilingual song to sell three million copies, but that is exactly what “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” did. Ever heard it? From the animated movie Encanto, this song is about a certain member of a certain family whom they don’t talk about. The family members feel comfortable talking about most things but not that thing.

Is that true for you? Is there something, most likely a personal struggle with an embarrassing sin, that you don’t talk about? Does anyone in your world know about how inferior you feel when you scroll on social media or how instinctively you fall apart at one person’s critical words or how often you are the first to order a drink and the last to stop drinking? Is anyone in your church family praying, encouraging, and spurring you on to fight your longtime battle against needing the last word or buying things you really can’t afford? Does anyone truly know what kind of sinner you are?

The book of Proverbs teaches us, “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (28:13). Few people make progress by keeping secrets. Maybe that’s why God wants you to bring your fiercest spiritual battles into the light so that fellow believers can fight by your side.

Looking for mercy? It might be one honest confession away.
