DAY 6 OF 15

When it comes to family, it’s typical to think we are stuck with them rather than that they are a gift to us. But this verse from the book of Proverbs suggests that there is a potential depth to a family relationship that can’t be replicated anywhere else. Why is that? Well, we can pick our friends. We can choose those we hang out with or invest time in. But our family? They are given to us. For better or for worse, we are connected. (And for some of us, it is definitely worse than better.)

What’s amazing is to know what kind of potential there is in our family relationships. Sure, we may be stuck with our family, but what if it was stuck in the best way possible? If we can’t escape our family, what if we use that unavoidable connection with them to our advantage? What if we fostered relationships with our family that made them the kind of people we could count on in our worst moments? What if being unable to escape our family was more of a blessing than a curse? We could have people who could potentially be the ones we count on when things feel like they are falling apart. So, what if we did our part to make our family relationships the kind of relationships where this might be true?

This week, look for opportunities to make the first move in changing the way you view your family, seeing them less as a burden and more as a potential gift.

About this Plan

Your Move

No matter what our family experience is, we all know that with family comes complications, challenges, and unique circumstances unlike any other relationships in our lives. The family we came from and the family we’ve made continue to shape us. They are also the people who can leave us with the most pain and the most regret. In this devotional, we’ll discover how to navigate the relationships with our family.
