Why Do You Call Him ‘Lord, Lord?’ Fitness & LordshipSample
Purpose: Asking ourselves, “Is He Lord of our fitness decisions?
During my time in Kansas, I had several opportunities to chat with my brother, the Coach. One of the things we discussed was calming yourself down before making a decision. He advises his athletes to do this in practice and in real life. He mentioned one young man in particular, saying, “I told him to count to ten before he makes a decision; I guess he only reached 9.”
The fitness choices we make have a significant impact on our overall well-being. The older I get the more essential it is that I think carefully and make informed decisions regarding my body. Is that surgery needed? How often should I workout? Will this food choice help me feel better?
Today, we turn to Proverbs 3:5-6. It's a familiar passage to many of us, but when I look at it in the Passion Translation, it takes on a slightly new tone,
Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart rely on him to guide you, and he will lead you in every decision you make. Become intimate with him in whatever you do, and he will lead you wherever you go.
As we consider the question, “Is He Lord of our fitness decisions?” We must first agree on the definition of ‘Lord.’ From the Helps Word Study, I discovered that a ‘Lord’ is ‘a person exercising absolute ownership rights.’ God is not interested in partial rights. He wants and deserves absolute ownership rights. In that light, our opinions must take a backseat to His Word. Our plans, wisdom, and insight cannot take us as successfully through life as He can. It's time to seek His guidance. Before we embark on new fitness routines or food plans, let's pray for guidance. Ask Him to reveal your unique needs and the path toward well-being that aligns with His purpose for you. Staying in tune with the Holy Spirit's rhythm is a daily task. This ongoing surrender to Christ's guidance is the practice of making Him Lord over our lives. It's a conscious choice to let His will guide our steps, not just in grand decisions but in the daily grind of pursuing wellness.
Goal: Seek His guidance.
Assignment: Reread Proverbs 3:5-6. What is your decision-making style, and how can you bring God into your process and truly make Him ‘Lord, Lord?’
Question for Reflection: In what situations have my fitness decisions been at odds with His Lordship?
