Jesus Through Us: Following His Example in Love and Service

DAY 4 OF 7

Pointing away from Ourselves

We live in an ultra-competitive society that constantly strives for first-place accolades. People dedicate their entire lives to winning at all costs, to being recognized, to becoming someone notable. For most people, it’s not how you play the game, it’s whether you win or lose, whether you make it to the top or not. Many people will give up everything and do whatever it takes for the win.

Jesus knew this about human nature. He knew we reserve seats of honor in social settings. He knew the recognition those who do well can earn. But He encouraged His followers to do the opposite of what the world does, in both our spiritual lives and our lives in general. Jesus said to take the attention off of ourselves and put it on Him, to lift up others, encourage others, love others, and see others as worthy. Paul would later emphasize the same principle in Philippians 2:3–4: “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too” (NLT).

Especially when it comes to our spiritual walk, we should be pointing people toward God in every way possible; and one of the simplest ways to do this is in how we treat others. By lifting others up and making ourselves lesser, we make a bold statement for Christ. Then, when someone does recognize us and lift us up, how much better does it feel knowing that we did not seek or encourage that praise!

What does Jesus mean by encouraging us to take “the lowest place” (Luke 14:10 NIV)?

Read Philippians 2:5–11 and write down the characteristics this passage describes of the best servant: Jesus Christ. Then write down specific ways you can imitate Jesus based on this passage.

Lord, forgive me for allowing my pride and competitive nature to affect the way I treat other people. Enable me to lift them up, to help them recognize their worth. Replace my pride and selfishness with Your heart for others. Don’t let me look down on anyone. In Your name, amen.

About this Plan

Jesus Through Us: Following His Example in Love and Service

Jesus desires to minister through us to spread the message of His kingdom to other people. In this devotional, you will discover Jesus’s priorities and be encouraged to make His priorities your own, reflect His nature, and use the gifts He’s given you, following His example in love and service. Loving God and loving others are the greatest commandments; if we love God, we can love others in His name.
