God, When Will It Be My Turn? The Promise of Marriage

DAY 3 OF 3

As singles, it’s easy to feel like your life is in a perpetual state of waiting. Waiting for the right person to come along, waiting for a relationship that aligns with our deepest desires and dreams, waiting for a partnership that leads us closer to God.

Here’s what this passage from Hebrews can teach us about waiting on the promise of marriage.

Hope is Active

The word "hold" suggests an active, intentional grip. It’s not a passive waiting but a vigorous act of faith. Holding onto hope means continually reminding ourselves of God’s promises about our future, including His plans for companionship and love. It means praying, seeking, and staying open to God’s guidance while actively living out our faith in the present.

Hope is Steadfast

The adverb "unwavering" paints a picture of a straight path, unobstructed by distractions or detours. In the context of singleness, it’s about keeping your focus on God’s promises and character, rather than getting sidetracked by societal pressures or personal anxieties. This steadfastness is a testament to your trust in the one who is always faithful.

Faithful is He Who Promised

Perhaps the most comforting part of this verse is the affirmation that "He who promised is faithful." This is not about the strength of your faith but about the unchanging nature of God. His faithfulness is not contingent on your ability to remain hopeful; rather, your hope is fueled by His unrelenting faithfulness.

Practical Ways to Hold Fast to Hope

Prayer and Meditation: Spend time in prayer and meditation, asking God to fortify your heart with His peace and guidance. Let your prayers for a spouse be accompanied by prayers for personal growth and deepened faith.

Community Engagement: Get in a like-minded community. During my single season, I joined the singles ministry at church, and it was a blessing to be with other singles on the same path as me.

Serve: Look for opportunities to serve in your community or church. Serving others can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Discipleship: Dive deeper into God’s Word and other resources that affirm His promises and character. Understanding more about God’s nature and His plans for relationships can strengthen your hope.

Embrace this season and remember, God is faithful to fulfill His promises.

Think It Over

How have you experienced God's faithfulness in the past, and how does this shape your trust in Him as a promise keeper in your current season of singleness?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

In this season of singleness, I pray for the strength to hold fast to the hope that You have planted deep within me.

Lord, help me to see this time not as a waiting room but as a garden where You are cultivating my spirit, growing virtues of patience, kindness, and faithfulness within me. Teach me to cherish this season, knowing that in everything, You are preparing me for the promise.

Remind me that You are the faithful promise keeper. Your word never returns void, and You are committed to fulfilling every promise You have made. Help me to lean into Your faithfulness, resting in the assurance that You know my needs before I even speak them.

Surround me with a community that encourages and uplifts, that helps me to grow in love and spirit. Let my life be a testament to Your love and a beacon of hope that does not disappoint.

Thank you, Lord, for being with me in every season, for Your love that never fails, Your peace that surpasses understanding, and Your joy that becomes my strength. I look forward to the day of Your promise fulfilled, but until then, I will rejoice in the journey, knowing that I am never alone, for You are with me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
