Growing a Joyful HeartSample
Is Joy Possible? By Cheri Strange, PhD
A joy-filled life seemed elusive. At least it did for Sharon, who was passed over by others, ignored, familiar with sideline living, and so very insignificant. It seemed only natural for God to view her the same way. Biblical scenes of joyful individuals partaking in the extraordinary (like Paul and John the Baptist), known and loved by God, land like tall tales on an invisible nobody. Her prospects of becoming a follower of Christ oozing with joy seemed just as unlikely.
Sharon believed Jesus loved her and died for her sins, but her faith remained distant. The familiar children’s song “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” reinforced the sentiment. God cares about her within the entire world, just not as an individual. Where is the joy in that? she wondered. From Sharon’s perspective, God invited her to be His child, along with the masses, because that’s what a good God does. He is not obligated to know or appreciate her distinct personality. Left unchallenged, a person with this speculative understanding can live a lifetime without experiencing all God intends.
Fortunately, Sharon joined a women’s Bible study, challenging her assumptions. She discovered biblical promises available to every believer. She learned God could embrace the entire universe while offering her a personal invitation to be loved, known, and used. In time, Sharon came to know the blessedness in Christ available to her through prayer. Sharon asked God to fill her with the peace and joy she read could be hers. Soon a life oozing with joy that once seemed too fantastical became hers.
To experience overflowing hope, unexplainable peace, and all joy, begin with prayer. For the woman feeling lost in the masses or insignificant, God still pursues the individual.

About this Plan
Joy is the gift from God that keeps a smile on your face, a song in your heart, and a spring in your step. A fruit of the Holy Spirit, joy comes from focusing on what God has done and will do - rather than focusing on our circumstances. Once joy overflows in our hearts, we share that abundance and become joy givers.
