Hope Beyond Circumstances

DAY 3 OF 6

There Is a River

The book of Psalms is full of poems and songs, most of which were written at specific moments when the author was experiencing pain or joy. These are the most typical moments to seek help.

Psalm 46 is no exception; it has a lot to say about how we perceive our circumstances. The first three verses say that "even if the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the sea," “we will not fear.” And how are we to keep from fear? "Be still and know that I am God." The poet's words are about the intersection of pain, circumstances, hope, and trust. It is about how, amidst the situations we go through, we can seek God and, in doing so, find comfort and peace.

In the confusing whirlwind of human experience, we come across moments of joy and sadness, victory and defeat, peace and affliction, rest and struggle. No day is the same as another, and each will bring its troubles. No matter how hard we try to plan our lives and secure our future, there will always be something we fail to foresee that can change our lives. But amidst all that, there is a constant river, a symbol of God’s presence in our lives. The kingdom of heaven reveals itself, and we can't ignore it.

The river flows through all circumstances. These verses don’t demand that the earth stop giving way, that the mountains cease falling into the sea, that nations stabilize, or that earthly kingdoms be restored. Despite the pain we may endure, the constant river of God’s presence flows with magnificent consistency through it all.

No matter what pain we face today, no matter what test or situation comes our way, God’s presence is available. He is here. That comfort is the substance of heaven and melts the oppressive power of our worldly circumstances. His peace is the undeniable testimony of His presence. He has promised to guard our hearts so we can stand firm in storms. No matter what valley we cross, we are not alone.

Lord, today, I choose to place my trust in You. I ask that You take my circumstances and lead me through them, holding Your hand, seeing You as greater than them.
