How to Embrace Your Identity in Christ

DAY 1 OF 5

Too Good to Be True?

When you said yes to following Jesus, you gained a new identity. By turning from sin and accepting Jesus’ free gift of forgiveness, you became an accepted child of God, an ambassador of His way of life, and a part of His global family—the Church.

That’s not all that God says about us either. He also calls us overcomers, mountain movers, and even masterpieces. We can find these labels in Scripture, and while we know they’re true, they can also feel a little too good to be true.

Maybe, like so many people, you’ve wondered:

Am I still forgiven after what I’ve done?

Could I really be accepted just as I am?

How could I be a masterpiece after the life I’ve led?

It’s easy to read verses about our identity in Christ. It can be harder to embrace it and let it influence how we treat ourselves and others. So let’s learn how to do that together.

God’s Identity

Before we explore our identity in Christ, let’s talk about God’s identity. Who is He? For one thing, God is love.

Love isn’t what God does; it’s who He is. It’s His identity—and His identity doesn’t change. That means God loves everyone. And “everyone” includes you!

He loves you. Not in a generic, impersonal way, because He knows you better than anyone. He knows your interests, quirks, and all of your most embarrassing moments. He knows your talents, passions, and how you can change the world. He’s also seen all the moments you wish you could forget. He sees all of it, and He loves you.

The foundation of your identity is that you are loved with no strings attached. Your good choices won’t increase His love, and your future failures won’t diminish His love either. Why? Because you simply aren’t powerful enough to change God’s identity.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for who You are. You are love, so I am loved. Help me to remember Your love for me every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Challenge: Today, simply remember that you’re loved. Do your best to stop believing lies that cause you to feel inferior to others. For more on letting go of lies and embracing truth, check out this article from Life.Church.
