Weird Ideas: Holy Church

DAY 5 OF 5

Let’s circle back around. Of all the things those early Christians could say about the Church, they chose the word “holy.” In the Apostles’ Creed: “the holy catholic church.” In the Nicene Creed: “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.” Strange to modern ears, but to God, his Church is holy.

God is holy. He is set apart from everything else. He is special above all things. He is different than his creation. The essence of God is holiness through and through.

What we see in the Bible is that the holy and unholy just don’t mix. But God is not content to be separate from his creation. While in the Old Testament that which was unholy defiled the holy, God does something amazing in the New. When the holy Jesus comes across unholiness, he makes the unholy holy. God’s holiness trumps unholiness through and through!

That includes you.

This is why we call the Church holy. Christ has given you a special calling, a special mission, a special mandate. He sets you apart as a people of his own. Don’t let a fear of personal unholiness keep you from God or his Church. Come to him who makes you holy.

If this plan helped you better understand how Christians see the Holy Spirit and his church, we encourage you to subscribe to the other “Weird Ideas” plans.

Day 4

About this Plan

Weird Ideas: Holy Church

Christians are different. They can’t help it. When you’re in Christ and filled with the Spirit, it changes you. This leads to weird ideas and alternate beliefs about reality. This series of 5-day plans uses classic Christian Creeds as a vehicle to explain the Christian worldview compared to the world’s, and help us see reality through Jesus’s eyes.
