21 Days in the Gospel of John With Levi Lusko Sample
Saved and Secure
Notice who may come: "If anyone enters..." The door is open to everyone. Jesus never offered exclusive invites. He said, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink." and "Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden." This is no double-decker Airbus with first-class suites, plasma TVs, and a $7,000 round-trip ticket price. Christ's desire is for all to come to Him. Whatever rank, age, or sex you are—of however deep a dye your sins may be—you are invited to enter in.
Once that invitation is accepted, we see the result in verse 28 of today's passage: "And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand." This verse speaks to the security of the believer and flies in the face of what has been called "losing your salvation." There are plenty of things that get lost: that matching sock, your car keys, your wallet. Once I searched my office for probably an hour for sunglasses that were on my head. I read about a guy in Germany who forgot where he had put his car until police officers contacted him to tell him he'd left it at a gas station pump. But Jesus shows that no one has ever lost their salvation. What is possible is someone who never had it in the first place.
Not everyone who says "Lord, Lord" will enter the kingdom of heaven. As we learned earlier, the proof of the Christian is in the living. 2 Peter 2:22 (NLT) says, "A washed pig returns to the mud." That's not to say a Christian won't fall into the mud—but he will get back up. You can tell if you are one of God's sheep by whether or not you follow Him, and once inside his fold, you can rest in the security of your salvation. "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39).
Remember: When you accept Christ's invitation, you can rest in the security of your salvation.
