Broken Things Devotional - Matthew West

DAY 5 OF 5

“But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 14:10-11)

The story of the Prodigal Son is a timeless tale that’s taken on countless forms even outside of the Christian religion. Why? Because the story is so powerful, and every single one of us resonates so deeply with his plight. The reason it connects with people in all walks of life is simple. We’ve all been the prodigal, haven’t we? We’ve all made decisions that have propelled us down a dark path we never expected to find ourselves walking. We’ve all lost our way, disappointing the ones we love most along the journey.

But really, I think the story of the Prodigal Son continues to capture our attention because of the twist ending. When he finally comes home, we never expect his father’s reaction. We always think, like the Prodigal Son, we’ll be met with condemnation, shame, retribution and punishment when we return to the place we call home.

Yet, the Prodigal Son found open arms, an expectant heart and a loving father who didn’t even let him make it all the way up the driveway before running down to meet him. And if that wasn’t enough, his father lavished him with gifts—gifts he surely didn’t deserve. To top it all off, he threw a party in his honor.

It’s a beautiful picture of how our Heavenly Father feels about us. No matter what we’ve done or the place we find ourselves in, we can always come home. He’s there, waiting with outstretched arms. And He’s ready to throw a party for us.

His love is unconditional. His grace is abundant. And His parties? Well, they really can’t be outdone. There’s an empty seat at His table…and it’s waiting for you.

Grace is a kingdom / With gates open wide / There’s a seat at the table just waiting for you / So, come on inside
