I’m Troubled: Devotions From Time Of Grace

DAY 3 OF 6

I feel so lonely

The logo for a nonprofit agency that advocates for children with autism is a puzzle piece. It’s a quiet and sweet way to promote the idea that autistic children are gifted and complex people and that they are needed for the full human picture to be revealed.

It is sadly possible to be lonely, achingly lonely, even when there are plenty of people around. Some folks are natural salespeople, outgoing and aggressive. Others are shy, awkward, too inhibited to seek out others. Some are so afraid of criticism and rejection that they avoid being with anyone they don’t know well. Some lose their few friends to death or moving away and never replace them with new ones.

It is one of the greatest benefits of congregational life to give people social capital. As people grow closer to Christ, they just naturally grow closer to each other. A common belief system is a marvelous bond, and it invites all those scattered puzzle pieces to interlock one by one. Congregations also are a significant labor force for Christ. There is nothing quite like the power of a group of volunteers in service to others that both brings value to the people they’re serving but also to their own lonely spirits. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

Go ahead. Take a chance. Get involved in some form of service and add your puzzle piece to the picture.
