5 Assumptions About God And Why They Are Wrong

DAY 13 OF 15

God Loves Us Just As We Are

Assumption: God will never be happy with me

If the core of our relationship with God is based off of how well we follow his laws, then we will become extremely frustrated and eventually give up. It can end up feeling like one big twisted game that we were destined to lose. Rather than fulfill or satisfy, seeking a relationship with God would launch us into a furry of unsettled confusion and bitterness. In our despair, we may think what kind of God is this that I can never make him happy? I’m done trying to be who God wants me to be.

The problem is we haven’t incorporated a true understanding of the heart and mind of God into the equation. We’re only looking at a partial image of the whole picture. We’ve been approaching God as if his love were conditional, as if his happiness is determined by our obedience. This false assumption that God will never be happy with us will end our relationship with him before it even had a chance to begin.

We need to understand that the core of our relationship with God is built from God’s unconditional love for us. God loves us no matter what we’ve done, good or bad. When we understand that, we can begin to truly understand the heart of God.

Growing up, my parents were determined to prepare me for life on my own. As a child, I interpreted these things as rules made up by grumpy, boring, control freaks. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to obey all the rules. I resented my parents for it until I got married and had my own place to take care of. It was then I realized that my parents had not been out to make my life miserable. They simply wanted to prepare me and protect me so that I could experience the true joy of life.

Without truly understanding the heart and mind of God, it can be very easy to believe that a relationship with God is all about doing the right things, obeying his commands, and listening to his rules. God is not out to get us or make our life miserable. God wants the absolute best for us. He wants us to experience the true joy of life just as my parents did.
