Different Life: 3rd Commandment

DAY 5 OF 5

The Sabbath is a sign that God wants to give us rest. Ultimate rest. We’re not talking about dying here. No. We’re talking about the fullness, beauty, and wonder of life lived in the glory of God and enjoying his presence forever. The Westminster Catechism will go so far as to call this the chief and highest end of man. The Old Testament Sabbath was a hint of that. Jesus comes to bring it fully. Jesus is our Sabbath rest.

So much of Sabbath practice throughout history fixated on what we weren’t supposed to do. But the true picture of Sabbath is of what we can do – enjoy God and his creation and the way of life he always intended life to be. It’s an invitation to live life as though we’re in the promised land as if God’s new creation has already come.

As Christians, we have a unique opportunity to live sabbaths in Jesus, who is our great Sabbath. And our Sabbath life serves as a sign of the life Jesus offers to those still in bondage and slavery. Jesus’s invitation to a Sabbath rest is for everyone.

If this plan helped you learn about the 3rd Commandment, we encourage you to walk through all 10 Commandments. Subscribe to the next plan: “Different Life: 4th Commandment” or others that have come before.

Day 4

About this Plan

Different Life: 3rd Commandment

Christians are different. They can’t help it. When you’re born again and filled with the Spirit, it changes you. This leads to different values about right and wrong and a different lifestyle to match it. This series of 5-day plans uses the 10 Commandments (following the classic Augustinian ordering) as a vehicle for an alternative, Christ-like morality and Jesus' way of living.
