The Issues of Life

DAY 5 OF 8

Heart Health - Reflect

The Exercise Of Reflection. We live in a very busy and noisy world. Sometimes, even though we are rested, we are bombarded with noise, tasks and busyness. So, we must intentionally pull away to a quiet place to pause and reflect. Interestingly, some people are afraid to be alone with their thoughts. They are afraid to be calm and hear their own thoughts. So, they seek to fill their lives with different things such as subscribing to a wide variety of television shows and streaming platforms. Just shut the television or device down, rest your mind and reflect.

The exercise of reflection is big and it is one of the things Jesus teaches us repeatedly through His actions. For example, in Mark 1:35 “The next morning, Jesus got up long before daylight, left the house while it was dark, and made his way to a secluded place to give himself to prayer.” (TPT, emphasis added). Jesus got up at the most quiet time of the day -if you will-, and left the house. This is something I like to do often; at midnight or very early in the morning, I step out of my house to spend time in prayer and reflection. You need to reflect.

Prayer is an aspect of reflection. Guess what? If you can find time to reflect, you will discover that you are beginning to have conversations with yourself. And it is okay to talk to yourself. If you are a person of faith, if you have a relationship with God, you can invite God into the conversation. Practice stillness. How? Get alone, sit down and be still – spirit, mind, soul and body. For some people, journaling helps them reflect.

As you may have observed, the exercises for the spiritual heart do not cause us to break a sweat. In fact, they do not even seem like exercises. But they are very important for a spiritually healthy heart.

Reflections
1. What do you need to talk to God about based on today’s reading?

2.Write out one action to take based on today’s reading.
