Two Gifts From God: Singleness and Marriage

DAY 5 OF 6

The Goodness of God’s Gifts

Is remaining single a mark of spirituality? Is marriage the ultimate solution to finding happiness? Paul begins by affirming the goodness of singleness. He is content in his singleness and encourages unmarried or widowed people to consider the benefits of remaining single. It is a valid and blessed choice. However, Paul clarifies that singleness is not for everyone. If self-control becomes a struggle and the temptation towards sexual immorality intensifies, marriage is a better alternative.

But the passage offers more than practical advice on choosing between singleness and marriage. It also emphasizes the importance of God-centered relationships. If marriage is in God’s plan for you, it must be with a believer whose heart is genuinely devoted to the Lord. Settling for a relationship based solely on a superficial profession of faith can lead to heartache and misery. The true joy in marriage comes when both partners find their satisfaction in Christ and love each other out of the overflow of their love for the Lord.

The beauty of marriage lies in its foundation on Christ’s love and the unity of two hearts wholly satisfied in Him. Marriage is not a magical solution to discontentment. Instead, it is an opportunity to experience the joy of walking together with a like-minded believer, supporting one another’s spiritual growth, and serving God in tandem. However, it is crucial to recognize that ultimate satisfaction can only be found in a vibrant relationship with the Lord. God has designed our hearts so that true contentment can only be derived from Him. Whether single or married, our fulfillment comes from knowing and delighting in God’s love, not from external circumstances.

Let us embrace the gift of singleness if it is our current state, finding joy in the unique opportunities it provides for serving God. If we desire marriage, let us entrust our desires to the Lord and seek a partner whose love for Christ aligns with ours. Regardless of our relationship status, remember that our hearts can find true contentment only in God. Maybe we need to reevaluate our priorities and desires. Are we seeking contentment in the Lord or fulfillment in relationships or possessions? Let us align our hearts with God’s purposes for our lives, trusting that His plans are always for our good.
