Preparing for Harvest

DAY 4 OF 5

Day 4 Patience

Matthew 13: 24- 30 is the Parable of the Weeds:

“Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’“‘ No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

As I mentioned in Day 1, not everything that happens to us is our fault. We live in a fallen world, and the enemy is at work. This Parable explains that although the enemy may throw weeds in our field, we are to let the weeds grow until harvest. Harvest in this contest is judgment day. When we are with God, we will be able to see the kingdom impact our lives had even though we may not be able to see it in this life. The farmer threw good seeds and did what was right, but the enemy tried to corrupt these good seeds. However, the wheat still grew, and the weeds were disposed of at the proper time. The weeds did not affect whether the wheat would grow because the farmer decided to leave it in God's hands.

It can be tempting to take control and take matters into our own hands, but there is something beneficial in waiting for God to act at the proper time. Patience is not a virtue celebrated in our culture today, but when we allow God to move, we can take the weight of the world off our shoulders and recognize God for as powerful as He is. We may need to let tension sit in certain situations to keep our integrity. God will take care of the weeds; we need to focus on the wheat.
