James: Advice for the Christian Life

DAY 2 OF 8

Trust and Step

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. (v. 6)

Can you imagine an aspiring soccer player who read countless books on skill development but never actually practiced? They may know all the proper footwork but never know the feeling of making a pass, scoring a goal, or even stepping on the field.

Evangelist and teacher Oswald Chambers wrote, “One step forward in obedience is worth years of study about it.” Christians often talk about the subject of obedience, but at some point, discussing it just isn’t enough. Whatever way we seek God’s direction in our life, there comes a point when we must obey what we read or what God is telling us. James was likely thinking about just such a situation when he wrote about asking for wisdom from God, but he also stated that you have to believe and trust (ask in faith), or you will be tossed around like a wave.

We can read about obedience and study about believing and having faith, but at some point, it’s time to step out in that obedience. Just as an athlete prepares for the game or a musician prepares for the concert, we must welcome the opportunity to live in the moment of obedience. Life calls us to step onto the playing field and display what we have learned. James reminds us to trust God and take a step.

As you pray, ask God to give you the boldness to obey his call.
