Your Words Have Power

DAY 2 OF 5

A Deeper Understanding of the Power of Our Words

If we truly understood the power of our words, I believe we would make a dedicated effort to speak differently. Maybe we know this concept as head knowledge, but it hasn’t yet become a true life-altering revelation that changes our individual lives.

Some time back, I was conversing with a man sitting next to me on an airplane. Our chat turned toward the Lord, and we discussed the power of the words we speak. He made a comment that resonated with me that I don’t think I’ll ever forget. He said, “This is not a new revelation to me. I’ve heard it, but I lost the conviction of it.”

Let’s think about that statement. Maybe we once had a conviction about our words, but do we now find ourselves in a new environment and speaking like others to fit in? Or perhaps we get discouraged and let words come out that we don’t really believe—words that aren’t full of life or faith. I’ve heard someone say, “I know God loves everyone, but I’ve done too much for God to love me.” How about if this person said instead, “I know God loves everyone, and I’m going to spend time reading my Bible and praying every day to get closer to Him.” Sometimes we speak fear instead of faith, saying, “I’m afraid of catching a cold” instead of, “I’m putting on my full armor and praying Psalm 91 daily.”

We might be tempted to speak our doubts, or lack, or dread, or insecurities, but here is the problem. We are not going to successfully walk in this truth if we lose the conviction of the power that’s in our spoken words. Without a conviction, it’s nothing more than a formula and weget legalistic, hear it as a rule, and later find ourselves reverting back to our old habits of how we once talked.

Our confession, the words coming out of our mouth, have supernatural power. Proverbs 18:21 boldly says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

My covenant over my speech can simply be:

Father, according to Your Word, I choose to control the words I say so that my character will mature and be fully developed. Help me today and every day to speak words of life, realizing the power that my words carry. May how I talk about myself, the things I say to my children, and the attitude reflected in my words toward others, including strangers, produce only good fruit. Let this become a truth on the inside of me. In Jesus’ name. Amen

About this Plan

Your Words Have Power

Do you recognize the true power of your words? For both good and evil? Many people are unaware. If there was one thing you could do to become spiritually mature, would you do it? If just one thing would make you perfect, would you want to know what it is? Let’s look to the Bible for what the book of James has to say.
