Do not jump until you hear Jesus call you

In the account of Jesus walking on water and Peter's attempt to do the same, we find a crucial lesson about waiting for God's timing and direction before taking action. After feeding the five thousand, Jesus dismisses the crowd and sends His disciples ahead in a boat to the other side of the sea while He goes up the mountainside to pray.

Here, we see that Jesus intentionally separated Himself to seek communion with the Father in prayer. Meanwhile, the disciples find themselves struggling against strong winds and waves during their journey across the sea. In the darkest hours of the night, they encounter a supernatural sight – Jesus walking on the water towards them. Fear grips their hearts as they mistake Him for a ghost.

It is in this moment of fear and uncertainty that Peter, impulsive and eager, calls out to Jesus, "Lord if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." Peter's request reveals both faith and impetuosity. On one hand, he demonstrates a willingness to follow Jesus wherever He leads, even to places that defy natural laws. On the other hand, Peter's impulsive nature can sometimes lead him to act without fully discerning God's will.

Jesus responds to Peter's request with a simple command, "Come." In that divine invitation lies the assurance that Peter could indeed walk on water by Jesus' side. However, before Peter could experience the miraculous, he needed to step out in faith and obedience, acknowledging Jesus' authority over the elements.

The significance of this moment is not merely the miracle of walking on water but the importance of waiting for Jesus' call before taking a leap of faith. Peter's willingness to step out of the boat is commendable, but the timing is crucial. It is not enough to be eager or excited about following Jesus; we must seek His leading and confirmation.

Reflecting on our own lives, we may encounter situations where we feel compelled to make decisions or take actions based on our desires or the opinions of others. However, the story of Peter reminds us that we must pause, seek God in prayer, and listen for His call before taking any steps.

When we eagerly jump into situations without waiting for Jesus' leading, we risk heading in a direction that might not align with His plan for us. Impatience can lead to unnecessary struggles and difficulties. God's timing is perfect, and He knows what is best for us. When we submit to His timing and guidance, we open ourselves up to miraculous possibilities, just as Peter experienced when he walked on water with Jesus.

Sometimes, in our enthusiasm or eagerness to do something for God, we may be tempted to jump ahead without waiting for His leading or guidance. Are there areas in your life where you might be rushing ahead without seeking God's will or direction? Take some time to reflect on why it's essential to wait for His calling and how it can impact your life when you choose to listen before taking action.

Prayer:

Grant me the strength to resist the temptation to jump ahead without seeking Your guidance. Instead, may I rely on Your wisdom and understanding, knowing that You hold the blueprint of my life in Your hands. Lead me, Lord, and I will follow, for I trust in Your goodness and faithfulness.
