DAY 5 OF 17

We’re journeying together and learning how to be at home with the Father, no matter your circumstances. And today, we do that through the practice of frugality. (These are getting more convicting by the day, no?)

Frugality is when we abstain from using money or goods at our disposal in ways that merely gratify our desires for status or luxury.

In our society today, no extravagance is that thought to be shameful. We’re taught to want more, more, more. What the practice of frugality frees us from is the concern with earthly things. We derive freedom with God’s help of the belief that one day “more” will be enough. The truth is, the chasm between “more” and “enough” is one that’ll never be reached.

When you put this discipline into practice, what you realize is that the true riches are in heaven, where we’ll be at home with the Father for eternity. And we can experience that today through frugality.

Learn more about frugality in today’s video.

Today’s invitation:

Let’s practice frugality. Here are a few ideas:

  • First, get clear on your finances. Get out of the vague. Figure out what you’re spending and what you’re giving. Debt is a primary source of enslavement that frugality can help with.
  • Decide what is enough. How much is enough for you? What happens for most of us is when your income increases, your lifestyle increases. Stop the cycle and close the chasm.
  • Don’t wait until you feel generous to give. Today, you could choose to spend a little less money that you otherwise would and then give that away.
  • If someone has something they want you to share, share it.
  • Above all, remain with the Father––be at home with Him—through the practice of frugality.
