DAY 5 OF 5

Day 5: Get Advice

Today we’re looking at something essential for becoming wise: seeking advice, instruction, and correction.

Get Advice

Proverbs teaches that fools confidently assert that their ways are right, even when they reject God’s commands. They arrogantly trust in their own wits and, if questioned, explode, causing strife. (We all know someone like that, don’t we?) In contrast, the wise listen to advice and weigh it. If the advice doesn’t seem right, they pursue further advice from others.

Follow Instructions

All of us have faced the consequences of not reading directions or of reading them, but either ignoring or not understanding them. Proverbs tells us we must love and store instruction. It warns that if we ever stop listening to instruction, we’ll go astray.

Heed Correction

It’s not just advice and instructions that we need. The wise also heed correction. This holds true in relationships, business, and spiritual matters.

It’s counterintuitive, but people honor those who heed reproof. Taking correction results in our being able to help others. Additionally, our response to correction shows our character. According to Proverbs, stupid fools hate correction, while the wise love it.

_____

As you read the following proverbs, reflect on why taking advice, following instructions, and heeding correction are essential to becoming wise. Pray about who might give you good advice.
