The Thread: Part IISample
I AM the LORD
Ever since the rebellion in the Garden of Eden and after the debacle at the Tower of Babel, the divine rule of the earth had been in conflict. By Moses's time, the world's gods had subjugated humans to various evil practices. In today's passage, the God of the Universe, the LORD of lords, began to assert his authority. God directly confronted the gods of the world through the people he chose to place his name on: the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Seventeen times, God told Moses, "I": I am, I appeared, I will. God directly engaged the gods of Egypt to demonstrate his superiority over everyone, taking another crucial step in his plan to redeem humankind from the bondage and slavery imposed by the evil ones. Beginning with the children of Israel, God is exercising his superior Lordship.
It is wholly appropriate to insert your own life right here in these verses. God will deliver you from slavery to sin. God will lead you out of the burdens of this world. God has made a covenant with you through the blood of Jesus.
Question: You belong to the one true God. What other "gods" have you given authority to?
Prayer: In response to the blood covenant that God has offered, confess with your heart and mouth that Jesus is LORD. Do it today and reap the reward of freedom only Jesus brings.
Go Deeper: Reread this passage. This time, read it out loud and pay attention to the "I" statements of God.
