MADE FOR THIS MOMENT: DAVID
God Fights our Battles
READY
All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands. 1 Samuel 17:47 NIV
SET
God loves to use the unexpected to accomplish His purposes. He often shows Himself most clearly through circumstances that don’t make sense. Why wouldn’t God use the least expected Israelite to defeat the most intimidating Philistine? There was a lot on the line (17:9, 25). Only one side could win the battle.
David had never been to war like his older brothers had. He was a shepherd. Of all the Israelites, it’s unexpected that David, the youngest boy, would be confident to stand up against Goliath in a fight. All the other men shuddered in fear, while David felt confident from his experiences protecting his sheep. To all the others, that wasn’t enough experience, but to David, it was all he needed.
David defeated Goliath with a sling and a stone. The king had no clue who he was or whose family he belonged to. He had no notoriety amongst the Israelites. That didn’t matter. David believed he could win because of the treasury of trust he had built with God through keeping his father’s sheep. David had protected his sheep from lions and bears, so why wouldn’t he be able to protect his people from Goliath?
God is with you, and he is for you. He is always preparing you for battle. No matter the battle you are called to fight today, whether it be fighting a lion, a bear, or a Goliath, the battle is already won. We are all called for a specific purpose, and God carries us through our callings. We just need to surrender our fears, trust in His perfect plans, and live out the life He has set before us.
You are preparing to fight a battle on the biggest stage of your career. Lots of eyes will be looking at you, studying your every move — some cheering for you, some cheering against you.
