The Selfless Self: Give God Your “____Ever”

DAY 6 OF 6

The Power Behind It

In the concluding verses of Romans, we uncover the true source of spiritual power. Paul’s message is a call to action and an invitation to connect deeply with God and others. As he appeals through the love of the Spirit, he beckons us to “strive together in prayers to God.” He suggests prayer is a collective effort, a wrestling in unity.

Paul faced dangers and challenges, foreseeing his execution and seeking rescue from non-believers in Judea. Yet, his request was not solely for personal safety. He desired that his ministry to Jerusalem would resonate with the saints and be deemed acceptable. He aspired to journey with joy and return to his brethren refreshed. In other words, the essence of his calling was a cycle of joy and revitalization, echoing in harmony with those around him.

Paul’s discourse winds down with a powerful benediction, “May the God of peace be with all of you. Amen.” Romans thus concludes on two essential notes: mission and prayer. He frames a picture of us laboring together in prayer, in a unified struggle to bring about God’s purpose. His words introduce us to three crucial paths in missions: praying, giving, or going.

This devotional plan summed up consists of this: “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it. Wherever you want me to go, I’ll go. Whenever you want to send me, I’m willing.” This statement is a testament to surrender to God’s will, a dedication made both in our mind and heart. It’s also a great prayer. It’s not the words that have power, but the dedication behind them. Ask the Lord right now to make you willing and to give you the trust needed to pray that prayer.

Take some time to reflect on those words. Perhaps there is a ministry within your current vocation waiting to be discovered. Or maybe your calling is to shift your vocation toward full-time vocational ministry. Whichever path it may be, Paul assures us, it will bring joy and refreshment to your life. In fulfilling God’s purpose, we not only serve others but also nourish our own spirit.
