Praying Together: The Power of Praying With a Friend

DAY 5 OF 5

Who You’re Praying To!

When you answer the phone and it’s someone you’re close to, how do you know it’s them? Do they have a certain tone in their voice? Or do they call you by a nickname? Or maybe they ask you a question that a stranger typically wouldn’t know to ask?

While prayer isn’t quite like picking up the phone and calling God, Jesus emphasizes in Matthew 7:7-11 that it’s important to know who you’re talking to when You pray.

Jesus says that when you see a good father here on earth give their child something desirable, that is only a glimpse of the goodness your Heavenly Father desires to give you. Is that difficult to comprehend?

As you pray with a friend, consider sharing your view of God as Father. Is it easy to come to God as Father or is it more difficult because of your earthly father experience?

Now, take this conversation and invite Jesus to sit with you as you pray for and with each other. Use this prayer below as a starting point:

Heavenly Father, it isn’t always easy to call You, Father. However, we want to know You as the good Father You are who deeply cares for His children. How do You want to reveal your fatherly goodness to [name the person you’re praying with and then take a moment to listen to how the Holy Spirit might lead you next]? Guide us as we continually ask and seek Your heart. [Continue the prayer adding in whatever specific ways He leads you to pray.]

Talk It Over Together:

Whether in the chat or in person, here are some questions to consider as you find more opportunities to pray with a friend:

• What have you noticed about praying to your Heavenly Father?

• Why does this make as you ask, seek, and knock?

• How have you grown more confident in praying with someone through this devotion?
