[Unboxing Psalm 23] My Cup Runs OverSample
My Cup Runs Over
It is easy to be distracted and overwhelmed when there are recognizable enemies in our path. In Psalm 23:5, the Great Shepherd goes before us to protect and preserve our life so that we can enjoy sweet fellowship with Him and not fall victim to the distractions of this world. He anoints us with oil—gladness, comfort, and consolation to feel at ease at all times. We can choose to stay in the Great Shepherd’s presence because there is fullness of joy, and we can see our present condition in a different light. As we get to know our Great Shepherd we will find comfort, peace, and assurance in every circumstance.
When a cup runs over, it means it has more than enough. The same happens here when David says that his cup runs over. He has more than what he needs in his life. When we can shift our focus from the irritations of life, from the things we lack, from the presence of our enemies, into focusing on what the Shepherd has already done for us, our perspective and our viewpoint change.
Look at what the Great Shepherd has already done throughout Psalm 23 from verses 1 through 5: He is with you. He provides for you so that you lack nothing. He brings you to green pastures and still waters. He restores your soul. He leads you in His righteousness. He is with you even through difficult times. He comforts you. He goes before you and prepares a beautiful feast in front of you. He anoints you with the Holy Spirit.
If you focus on these wonderful things, and not on the irritations of this life, what would your cup do? It would overflow!
Christ has already done the work. He prepared the table and anointed our heads with the Holy Spirit. If we focus on Christ, we will see our cup daily overflows, even in the midst of difficult times. Heaven has been ushered into our midst. Heaven is all around us. Change your perspective and see yourself as abundantly blessed, because the Shepherd cares for you.
Do you recognize the Lord when He shows up? Do you see the abundant blessings of the Lord in your life? Can you truly say, “In the Great Shepherd I am abundantly blessed?
In the Lord, we have completeness, peace, restoration and righteousness, fellowship and companionship with Him, and abundant blessings beyond our wildest imaginings if we will just look for them!
