Acts: Go & Be Chapters 19-28

DAY 11 OF 20

What is this passage saying?

Jesus warned us not to take oaths during the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5:33-37). Instead, Jesus modeled integrity and character. He taught that every word we say should matter and be honest. But here in this passage, we see the Jewish leaders taking dishonest oaths. They hope to skew the situation and receive their desired result: Paul’s death. Oddly enough, Paul’s sister hears of this plot and sends her son (Paul’s nephew) to spread the word. Paul’s nephew meets with Paul in the barracks and gains a one-on-one meeting with the tribune. After sharing about the dishonest oaths and the plot to kill his uncle, the tribune encourages Paul’s nephew to keep this meeting a secret.

What is this passage teaching?

Isn’t it strange how God uses unlikely people in unlikely circumstances? As stated early this week, God is fighting for you (Exodus 14:14). And often, God fights for us using the people in our lives. For Paul, it was his nephew. Maybe for you, it’s a close friend who always has your back. Or a great coworker who speaks well of you when you’re not around? Maybe it’s the prayers from a grandma or a nice church lady? Or maybe no one comes to mind right now. Maybe you feel rejected, abandoned, or betrayed. There is good news! There is someone who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). Just like Jesus was there for Paul in His worst moments, Jesus is there for you in your worst moments. He is interceding for you, fighting for you, and preparing you for the good things He has in store. Those “good things” might not come until Heaven, but rest assured, good things will come to those who are in Christ.

How do I respond?

Take a mental note of people in your life who God has used to help, inspire, disciple, or support you. Pray for them by name and thank God for them. To take it a step further, send them a text or write them a letter to show appreciation. Be thankful for your community because they are God’s gift to you.
