Morning Coffee With James

DAY 4 OF 8

Ask God

Read James 1:5

God's Word to Them...

The early Christians lived during a time of religious free-for-all. Idol worship was common, and perversion of every kind took place in the names of various gods. These behaviors were such a common part of their society that these young Christians sometimes had difficulty recognizing them as wrong.

These new converts faced heavy persecution because of their faith in Christ. Lacking wisdom, they didn’t know how to handle many of these situations. How should they handle persecution? How should they respond to the paganism all around them? James told them to ask God. He would provide them with wisdom and direction.

God's Word to Us...

Do you ever feel like you are stumbling in the dark? Do you ever wish God would just place a big neon arrow in the sky, telling you which way to go? This verse tells us that all we have to do is ask! God is not playing some hide-and-seek game with us, withholding His wisdom and passing it out to a select few. He will pour out His wisdom on any and all who seek Him through prayer and reading His Word. He has given us the ultimate treasure-box in the Bible. On top of that, He has sent the Holy Spirit as a guide.

No matter your situation, no matter what mistakes you have made in the past, God wants you to seek Him for answers to life’s questions. He is the light. His Word is the road map. Follow Him.

Cream and Sugar...

In what areas of your life do you need wisdom?

Dear Father, thank You for providing the wisdom I need today and every day. When I am confused, please keep reminding me to look to You. Amen.

The Last Drop...

“Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.” —ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON

About this Plan

Morning Coffee With James

As the half brother of Jesus, James knew a side of our Lord that few others did. He ate with Him, slept with Him, played brotherly pranks. He worked alongside Jesus in the carpenter’s shop. He loved his brother. But as is the case in so many families, James was too close to his brother to recognize Him as special. I can only imagine the confusion and embarrassment James felt when his big brother told people He was the Messiah! I can only imagine the shame James carried when his big brother was executed like a common criminal. Then, after Jesus was dead and buried, James saw Him. His brother, whom he loved, stood right before his eyes! James lived out the remainder of his days building the church. We never hear James boasting about his relationship with Jesus. Instead, he refers to himself as Jesus’ servant. He calls his fellow Christians “brothers.” The book of James doesn’t tell us how to become a Christian. Instead, it is a practical how-to guide for Christian living. He tells us to persevere, to stand firm in our faith. He tells us to stop talking about our faith and start living it. He tells us to treat everyone equally and to stop playing favorites, to control our tongues, to seek God for all of life’s answers. James is a no-nonsense kind of guy. So pour yourself a cup of coffee and flavor it just right. Then, sit back and get ready to learn timeless lessons from James 1, the brother of our Lord.
