[Song of Songs] Like Magnets

DAY 4 OF 6

Go To The Right Places

The Bible often urges us to choose those we surround ourselves with very carefully. Bad company can corrupt good character. If we choose our friends carefully, wisely, we will surround ourselves with good people. If you are single and looking for someone to marry, where do you go to find someone with good character, who is not self–absorbed but servant–hearted?

In many ways, we become like the people we surround ourselves with. In Song of Songs, the bride asks the groom where he is and where he spends his time, because she wants to go there. If you are single, go where someone you might want to marry would be. If you look in the wrong places, chances are you will find the wrong person.

Church, work, and places where there are things you are interested in are good places to find a potential partner. The bride asks: “Where do you shepherd your sheep? I want to go there.” This is not a weird stalker deal happening. She was just saying, “I want to be around that place.” Some tell themselves: “The Lord will bring the right person to me, so I’ll stay home until then.” They imagine somebody will knock on the door and say, “I’m God’s will for your life.” That is probably not going to happen. Instead, say: “Hey, where do godly people hang out? I want to go there.” It does not have to be a single person’s number one priority, but it is a good thing to do.

It is also important to set good boundaries. We should never change our morals or our mission to find a date. The bride says in Song of Songs 1:7: “Tell me, you whom I love: Where do you pasture your sheep? Where do you let them rest at noon? Why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions?” The veiled women were prostitutes who would go to the places where the working men gathered. The bride is saying, “I’m going where the shepherds are, but do not think I am showing up with a veil. I will not change my morals or my mission.”

Anyone who is requiring you to change your morals or your mission for Jesus is not for you. If they love you on the inside, they will wait for you. Your morals and mission must remain. When we walk with God, He will provide.
