DAY 3 OF 4

Honoring Others: The Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Commandments

The fifth, sixth, and seventh commandments address the sanctity of relationships. They teach us to honor our parents, protect life, and uphold the covenant of marriage. Together, they show how God’s commands are not just about rules but about cultivating love, respect, and fidelity in our relationships with others. These commandments shape our homes, communities, and hearts, setting a moral framework that reflects God’s character.

The fifth commandment calls us to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12). This commandment wasn’t just about family respect in ancient Israel; it upheld the generational passing of God’s covenant promises. Today, it reminds us of the importance of valuing the wisdom and sacrifices of those who came before us. This command challenges the culture of independence that often overlooks family ties. Honoring parents involves not only obedience in youth but care, respect, and gratitude throughout life (Ephesians 6:1-3). How can we show this honor in ways that reflect God’s love?

The sixth commandment forbids murder, but Jesus deepened this command by addressing the anger and hatred that lead to violence (Matthew 5:21-22). This commandment goes beyond refraining from physical harm, calling us to be peacemakers and to protect the dignity of every human being. In a world marked by division, we must ask: Do our words, actions, and attitudes bring life and reconciliation, or do they tear others down?

The seventh commandment commands fidelity in marriage (Exodus 20:14). God established marriage as a covenant relationship, and this command protects its sanctity. Jesus expanded it further, teaching that even lustful thoughts break this commandment (Matthew 5:27-28). In a society where purity is often devalued, this commandment reminds us to honor God in our relationships, keeping our thoughts, hearts, and actions aligned with His design for intimacy (Hebrews 13:4).

These three commandments point us to the value of relationships—both with God and with others. They teach us to build families, protect life, and nurture faithfulness. This week, consider: How are you living out these principles in your daily relationships? Are you honoring others, fostering peace, and upholding God’s vision for love and faithfulness?

About this Plan

Still Relevant: The Ten Commandments

Although the Ten Commandments were given thousands of years ago, the wisdom and guidance God imparted to Moses through them at Mount Sinai still speaks to our modern lives. Far from being outdated rules, these commandments reveal God’s heart for justice, love, and holiness. They guide our relationships—with Him and with others—and challenge us to live with integrity in a world of shifting values. Are these ancient divine edicts still relevant in a world so different from that which the Israelites experienced? Absolutely! This four-day devotional will explore just how and why.
