Finding the Light in TraumaSample
DAY 7
CEASED
Thank you for coming along on our study this week as we have sought to overcome trauma by studying Scripture. Trauma is not just one distressing event, but it carries memories, flashbacks, terrors and more distress in the following days, weeks, months and even years that follow.
Through our Scripture study this week, I’m praying you are recalling moments of God’s power in your life so that when waves of trauma unexpectedly come rolling in, you are able to keep a focus on God’s power to help you overcome and defy all forces of nature.
Yesterday, we ended our verse at Peter crying out to Jesus to save him. Peter was walking on water toward Jesus, but when his focus was distracted and doubt started to replace faith, Peter started to sink.
Here is the last part of our study this week found in Matthew 14:31-33:
31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?" 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Peter was sinking because of his doubt and losing focus on his faith. Jesus quickly saved Peter. The Greek word originally used here is eutheōs (pronounced yoo-theh’oce) meaning immediately or right away. This means all Peter did was asked to be saved and it was done. There wasn’t a delay. Peter was immediately saved.
When Jesus climbed into the boat, the winds died down and ceased. It was then the disciples again realized the power Jesus held.
It amazes me that if only the disciples remembered the baskets next to them, perhaps Jesus would have never walked on water. Perhaps the disciples would have never even recognized the unexpected weather change. Yet, it was in the absence of recalling the power of our mighty Creator that the disciples were being tossed around by the waves, fearing the demonic forces that could come against them, and doubting their faith in Jesus.
Trauma will bring unexpected waves your way, but remember your baskets. As I told you yesterday, God has already proven His mighty power in your life. If you need a reminder, it’s ok. Remember just as Peter called out, he was saved immediately. God does not delay saving His children when they cry out.
What’s in your baskets? As you move forward with your days, keep those baskets close. When the winds of trauma unexpectedly hit, remembering those baskets will help you find the light.
I pray over you today for peace and I invite you to join me on another 3 Minutes A Day Series as we look to understand other mental health topics alongside Scripture.
