THE KEY TO GAINING WISDOM

When we think of time redemption, we instantly think of productivity. That’s undoubtedly a by-product. Most self-help authors focus on the productivity angle alone. But the real promise is so much more. The promise of redeeming time is immense. Moses saw a direct link between tracking time and gaining a heart of wisdom. How insightful that a man who wasn’t even going to cross the river into the promised land prayed this: “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom” (Ps. 90:12). Let’s break down this song that Moses wrote:

• Teach us—Moses appealed to God for a specific thing that would benefit the people.
• To number our days—The brevity of life with all its challenges and opportunities stood out in the mind of Moses, who had been shepherding God’s people. Moses was resolved about the need to track time and redeem it all to God’s glory.
• That we may get a heart of wisdom—Surprise! Redeeming time is inextricably linked to wisdom. What a striking correlation. Redeeming time is not just a wise move; it’s how we gain wisdom.

Psalm 90 isn’t a biblical anomaly. Scripture links time management almost exclusively to wisdom. Take a look at Ephesians 5:15-16 for another example. So let’s put a myth to death right now. Time management isn’t a self-help thing; it’s a God-help thing. Time does not come to us redeemed. Every minute we receive is a gift from God.

To redeem time means to “buy back” or “gain possession.” We can do it as we like. We will either redeem time or squander time; there is no gray zone. I want you to know how simple, yet powerful, this can be. Simply stop and surrender your calendar to God, and He will help us manage our lives by the days and hours.

So get after it. Resolve to find a system that accounts for your days/hours/minutes—it’s God’s idea. Plan your time before someone else’s plan captures your time. Time management isn’t selfishness; it’s stewardship. Don’t let “evil” snatch another day from your life. Today is loaded with potential. Get every bit of it with God’s help!
