Called to Shine

DAY 3 OF 3

Helping the light to burn bright

Today, we will witness Phillip, a disciple, being called. The disciple Phillip was even more passionate when summoned, while Samuel listened and provided service. Phillip was one of the first people to follow Jesus as he chose his disciples in the usual, ordinary places. He visited popular places, interacted with regular men, and did routine tasks. Phillip was invited to travel with our Lord to Galilee. But what action did Phillip take first? We have found the person Moses wrote about in the Law and about whom the prophets also wrote; he hurried to his brother Nathanael and shared the good news with him.

Not just any discovery would do. Phillip was ecstatic, also a new disciple. Maybe he didn't know what he believed yet. The best thing he had heard about, he knew, was Jesus. Jesus was too excellent to remain solitary. He was powerless to resist. He had to discuss Him. He had to inform his family and friends. Phillip was one of those new Christians who was always outspoken about his faith; he knew what he found and wanted to shout it from the rafters.

No matter how brilliant it appears outside, we need more people willing to let their light shine. Men, women, and young people who genuinely care about their friends and family and want to lead them to Jesus, above all else, are what we need.

Christ does not command us to idle away the hours with our hands buried in our pockets. Instead, he encourages us to spread the gospel to others. In addition to letting his light shine, Phillip decided to go in search of Nathanael and allow him to witness the Messiah for himself. One of the first things he advertised on the street was his familiarity with Christ. He decided to tell his loved ones the good news first. The unwilling, the educated, and the uneducated are all called by God. He uses them as-is and shapes them.

Jonah preached even though he wasn't willing. Samuel listened and followed orders despite not understanding what he heard. In his ecstasy, Phillip led others to the Lord. Christ. The world's light needs to be preached because he is the light that draws people toward the path of righteousness.
