DAY 16 OF 19

Day 16

First Kings chapters 17-19 describe several moments when God used Elijah to bring miraculous provision, healing, and victory for himself and others. Elijah should have had some confidence after experiencing these miracles, but one message from wicked queen Jezebel, “Off with his head!” sent him running for his life.

How could this existential threat be his reward for faithfully obeying God? Instead of walking in victory, he felt depleted and afraid.

In approaching the holidays, we might feel anxious as we look ahead to uncomfortable social situations or tense family gatherings. Maybe someone you know often tries to accuse you, trip you up, or even threaten you. Because they’ve always done it, you ponder how to avoid them altogether or at least minimize your time with them without offending the rest of your family.

How can we prepare for that?

Elijah ran for 40 days until he reached Mt. Horeb, desperately prayed, and waited to hear from God. He didn’t hear God in the earthquake, the wind, or the fire. He heard God’s voice in a gentle whisper.

God doesn’t physically shake us to get our attention, blow us over with His power, or burn us up in the heat of the moment. No, He waits until we set everything aside and quiet our hearts before Him.

Similar to what Elijah faced, what we face can be emotionally exhausting, draining, and riddled with anxiety. But God knew what Elijah was up against, and He knows what you are facing, too.

He can give direction and a plan of action, but His voice comes like a gentle whisper, so it benefits us to get quiet enough to hear it.

Action Step: Like Elijah, can you step aside and quiet the voices inside your head, whether anxiety, threats, or accusations? Can you breathe for a moment and invite the Lord into your space? Ask Him to show you the way to bring life, love, and hope to your community as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus!
