DAY 6 OF 7

Kingdom Math

One of the phrases we have grown attached to over recent years is, “God is our Source and everything else is simply a resource.” When we rely on God as the Source of provision, a lot of worry can be avoided, regardless of economic circumstances happening around us.

We also like to see ourselves as distribution centers who distribute resources that God brings in. As God blesses us with finances, we can freely share those things as He leads us. And let me tell you, God is limitless in resources because He created everything.

This is such a freeing concept. If our book sales go down one month, we don’t have to freak out, knowing we serve a limitless God. Amazon book sales are not our source, they are simply resources and streams God can bless when He chooses.

We see this principle in Psalm 1:1-3,

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” (NLT)

Whose ‘advice’ are you and I following? There are so many voices in the marketing world competing for our attention. We don’t always know the motives of these voices that hit us in our social media channels. If our roots aren’t planted in God, we are going to wither without much lasting fruit.

Bearing fruit each season and prospering in all we do sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

The prophet Jeremiah also taps into this kingdom math,

But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8 NLT)

Such trees are not bothered by the heat…if the economy crashes…if you receive an unexpected tax bill…if you lose a key client…if you get a negative book review…if your book promotion didn’t go as you expected…if your social media ads fall flat…etc.

It's crucial that as Kingdom writers and entrepreneurs, we plant deep roots in the Lord who is our hope. We live in a culture that seems to be growing more and more shallow. Whether it’s finances, creative ideas, or eternal impact, everything flows from God the Source. Rather than becoming reservoirs unto ourselves, we can be rivers of blessing to wherever God leads.

We were created to abide in the Source rather than living self-sufficiently. Jesus gives us these words,

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 NLT)

Sure, you and I can do a lot on our own. But we can’t produce fruit that lasts into eternity without being connected to Jesus the Source.

We’ve certainly had seasons where we tried doing things on our own. We like to refer to ourselves as redeemed workaholics who have striven in our own strength. It only left us feeling exhausted and frustrated.

Except for God being in the equation, it made no sense for us to be closing on the condo we bought a month after the pandemic started. Somehow, some way, God provided what we needed in order to make that happen. Rather than freaking out (like we have done in the past), we quietly sunk our roots deeper into the Lord and simply trusted.

God has resources that you and I don’t see. He’s always ready to open up His storehouses in order to meet the needs of His children. Do you have a financial need? God can meet that need. Do you need a book idea? God can supply what we like to refer to as a “God” idea. Have you been stuck in a writing rut? God can bring creative flow to your writing. Need a fresh marketing idea? Consult the Lord and see what He says or how He leads.

Kingdom math is possible only when we sink our roots in Christ alone. As we choose to do this daily, lasting fruit will be produced in our writing and our business.

Father, forgive me for those times when I’ve scurried and striven in my own strength. You are my Source and everything else is simply a resource.
