Raising Spiritually and Emotionally Intelligent Children

DAY 2 OF 4

Create a Spiritually and Emotionally Healthy Environment

And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. Genesis 21:9-10 (KJV)

Sarah was intentional about creating a safe environment for Isaac. She did not want her son subjected to bullying, strife, or mockery under her roof. Sarah did not tolerate emotional abuse. Studies show that most perpetrators of child abuse are not strangers. With this in mind, we must not act ignorantly when trusting others to care for our children's spirits, souls, and bodies. For example, we must make Spirit-led decisions when organizing or approving participation in events like sleepovers, choosing a nanny or school for our children, or allowing people to live in our family space.

In addition, the bondwoman and her son were products of Sarah's past mistakes, and their presence would have affected Isaac’s development. Sarah cast them out to protect Isaac. She is a role model for us (Isaiah 51:2). We must not allow adverse past experiences or mistakes to affect our children's development. We must cast them out!

In partnership with her husband, Sarah cast out what stood in the way of Isaac’s emotional and spiritual well-being. We must partner with God, our spouses, and divine relationships to enforce victory over anything that prevents us from creating a safe space for our children’s healthy development. Yes, we cannot shield them from every challenge because it is important that our children learn how to overcome adversities. However, we must do our part to shield them from preventable trauma and unnecessary spiritual battles.

Reflection: Is your past affecting your child's development? How are you creating an emotionally and spiritually healthy environment for your child? Do you have someone fighting for the future of your children with you? Do you have a mom/dad tribe like Ruth (Ruth 4:16-17)?
