Daily Bible Reading – October 2022: God’s Renewing Word of Peace and Justice

DAY 1 OF 31

October 1

Introduction

Following the Israelites’ escape from bondage in Egypt, the people are camped out at God’s holy mountain in the desert. In today’s reading, Moses meets his father-in-law Jethro and tells him all God had done. Jethro advises Moses to appoint judges to help him settle disputes among the people.

Scripture Reading

Exodus 18:1-27

Today’s Key Verse: Exodus 18:11a

[Jethro said:] “Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods.”

Reflect

Why did Jethro tell Moses that the LORD is greater than all other gods? In what ways have you experienced God’s greatness? What advice did Jethro give Moses? How are responsibilities delegated within your community of faith?

Pray

Lord God, you are indeed great and mighty and wondrous are your deeds. In your mercy, you have rescued me from bondage to sin. I thank and praise you for your steadfast love and care. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

1 Corinthians 11:17-34: The apostle Paul provides instructions for celebrating the Lord’s Supper.
