THE WAY OF HUMILITY
Humans have no room for pride in God’s presence, and pride is the root of the same idolatry that heightened the Lord’s anger toward Isaiah’s people. Idolatry is the prideful attempt to supplant the rule and reign of God over an individual’s destiny; and in this case, over an entire nation. But God promised that his anger would not last forever. Though he is holy and as such has no room for any impurity or sin in his presence, he will still receive those who come to him in a contrite and humble way.
The hope of salvation is in Jesus alone, and yet the only way to truly come to Jesus is through humility. In coming to Jesus, we must first admit and confess our great sin of self-worship and self-lordship, accepting and owning the fact that we have rebelled against our true and right Master. The one who persists in pride, convinced of their own righteousness and goodness, will find no comfort and no forgiveness. But those who come to the cross with confession on their lips will find the grace and mercy they need from him (Jn 1:14, 17).
Jesus, protect me from the idolatry of pride. Humble me and use me. Amen.
